Prologue and Beginning

Servants

Saber

Saber is unknowingly summoned by Emiya Shirou. She immediately fights off Lancer and does well until he uses Gae Bolg (Sashi Ugatsu Shikyoku no Yari). She survives the blow but sustains damage. The fight ends with Lancer leaving the fight. Sensing another presence, Saber goes out to fight Rin and Archer.

Her motivation for fighting in the Grail War is so that she can redo her life. The catalyst for her summoning was Avalon.

Archer

Archer is summoned by Tohsaka Rin, but loses his memory for a day. He tours the city with Rin and later fights against Lancer to a standstill using only Kanshou and Bakuya. Lancer takes off to deal with Emiya Shirou, and Archer is unable to track him further. Later on, he goes to the Emiya residence with Rin to head off Lancer, but...

He has no real motivation to fight in the Grail War, though if he ever ran across Emiya Shirou, he would take the opportunity to kill him.

Lancer

Lancer is summoned by Bazett Fraga McRemitz, but loses her arm and her command mantras Kotomine Kirei. He contracts with Kotomine in order to continue participating in the war.

His motivation to fight in the Grail War is to just fight strong opponents. The catalyst for his summoning was the pair of earrings he wore.

Rider

Rider is summoned by Matou Sakura, but she yields the Master rights to Matou Shinji. Rider operates at lower stats because of this.

She has no real motivation to fight in the Grail War. The catalyst for her summoning was Sakura's personality.

Berserker

Berserker is summoned by Ilyasviel von Einzbern prior to the Grail War and trained with her. When the Grail War started getting underway, he had his intelligence sealed by Ilya. At the same time, though, he was her only friend.

His motivation to fight in the Grail War is to protect Ilya. The catalyst for his summoning was a pillar from one of his temples.

Caster

Caster was summoned by an unknown Master, but she killed him because of his evilness and jealousy of her abilities. She survived for two days with her store of maryoku before falling in love with Kuzuki Souichirou, who took her in. From then on, she has been sucking maryoku out of Fuyuki citizens.

Her motivation to fight in the Grail War is to be with Kuzuki. The catalyst for her summoning is unknown.

Assassin

Assassin was summoned by Caster to protect the entrance to Ryuudouji, which was the only part of the area not protected by a barrier.

His motivation to fight in the Grail War is to fight a strong swordmaster (which would justify his perfected swordsmanship). The catalyst for his summoning was Ryuudouji itself.

Saber

This is Saber's route, so she gets the most attention. With the weakest of the Shirous as her Master, though, not even her classification as "Saber" is enough to fully make up for it.

Following the fight with Lancer, she critically wounds Archer, taking him out of action for several days. Later, she will fight Berserker and be defeated (though she still lives since Shirou decided to take the blow from Berserker). When Shirou tells her to not go to Ryuudouji to fight the unknown Servant there, she does so anyway and duels Assassin. She is unable to break through and is carried back by Shirou.

When Blood Fort Andromeda is used on the school, Saber is summoned and engages Rider. Saber is the superior fighter in the battle, but Rider flees with Shinji later on. Saber and Shirou patrol the city, and Saber engages Rider. She uses her Noble Phantasm Excalibur to defeat her, but is drained of energy.

In the fight against Berserker in Einzbern Forest, she is unable to do any significant damage to him. She attempts to use Excalibur, but is stopped by Shirou. Later, she defeats Berserker with Shirou and his traced Caliburn.

In Caster's attack on the Emiya residence, the Dragon Tooth Warriors are no match for Saber. She avoids getting Rule Breaker'ed by Caster, but Gilgamesh appears and kills Caster instead. Her fight against Gilgamesh in the city results in her being utterly defeated by Ea/Enuma Elish. However, Shirou returns Avalon to her, giving her a boost in maryoku and a trump card to use against Gilgamesh. She defeats him with a point-blank Excalibur attack. Afterwards, she uses Excalibur to destroy the Black Holy Grail and lets go of her quest for the Grail. She finally dies with Bedivere watching her.
